Welcome to signposts

Signposts is based in Sheffield but works across South Yorkshire. We run regular Writers Resource Centres in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham providing information on all aspects of creative writing. We also run workshops, writing groups, projects and events for adults and young people in each of the four boroughs.

Our mission is to inform, inspire and energise writers and writing. We work with new and experienced writers and in partnership with a range of arts and education providers.

We're on the move

20 Mar 2013

Spring is in the air (well, actually seems to still be buried under frosty ground) and Signposts is heading to fresh pastures and new ventures. After 5 happy years at The Circle, we've decided to take up our natural home at Bank Street Arts which is fast becoming a hub for the literary and creative arts. We'll have a lovely new office and, later on this year, we'll be launching our new Writers' Studio which will house a multitude of helpful writing resouces as well as offering writers a creative space to escape from the distractions of modern life. We're looking forward to being able to work more closely with The Poetry Business and with Bank Street to provide new opportunities for local writers, and we'll be asking for your suggestions soon. We'll also be able to savour the delights of the To the Lighthouse cafe which is run by The Rude Shipyard. If you haven't been yet, you really should! In the meantime, watch this space and send any mail to our new address at Signposts Writing Project Bank Street Arts 32-40 Bank Street Sheffield S1 2DS Looking forward to seeing you soon. Who we work with

young writersYoung writers

Signposts runs young writers' groups in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. We offer young people, aged 13-18, the opportunity to form their own creative communities, to experiment with different writing styles and to take part in a wide range of workshops, projects, performances and residentials.

new and experienced writersNew and experienced writers

We aim to be the first point of contact for writers in South Yorkshire and pride ourselves on offering services to meet the needs of first-time, emerging and professional writers alike. Our strong, collaborative ethos and our network of contacts in the arts ensures that we are able to signpost anyone with an interest in writing to an opportunity that is right for them.

partners and organisationsPartners and organisations

We work with other literature organisations, libraries, festivals and arts providers both to deliver writing activities and to promote writing in its broadest sense. We are always happy to build partnerships with new organisations and to help to deliver new writing activity in the region.

Our services

For Writers

We co-ordinate information about writing groups, events and opportunities through our monthly e-newsletter and offer 1:1 advice and information through regular Writers Resource Centres in libraries. We also act as a direct provider of writing activities and are able to offer a range of professional development services for writers and literature development professionals.

For schools and community groups

Our staff and freelance writers have a vast wealth of experience of running writing projects in schools and with community groups. We can tailor projects and workshops to meet the needs of your group and can also offer activities leading to accreditation via Arts Award.

For business

Signposts can provide a range of services for business, from creative writing and communication workshops to commissions for public art. Please get in touch to discuss how we can help your business to stand out from the crowd.
