Signposts is an arts organisation that creates and runs projects and activities based around writing. We work with new and experienced writers as well as those who don't consider themselves as writers at all. Our regular activities are to run Sheffield Writers Resource Centre and The Inky: (Writers and Readers Newsletter). Through these we give information about a wide range of writing activities and events in Sheffield and surrounding area, run by the University of Sheffield and Hallam University, the Workers Educational Association, Off The Shelf festival, colleges and other organisations. The Writers Resource Centre also carries up-to-date information and advice for writers about many aspects of the writing world and industry.
Our other activities are to organise and run writing workshops, advice surgeries, combined arts work, publications, residencies and other writing-based projects. We work with writers with both local and national profiles, as well as visual artists and musicians, and partnership organisations in the UK and abroad. Our tastes are wide-ranging and inclusive. Our projects have worked across the spectrum from the familiar, traditional and well-tried, to the experimental, boundary-pushing and innovative. We believe in offering different experiences at different times, aiming to cater both for different tastes as well as for people at different stages of their writing journeys.
Signposts was started in 1996 by its current Projects Director, Matt Black, a practising writer and performer, and a group of enthusiastic writers and volunteers. It currently works with a core projects management team consisting of Matt Black and Geoff Briggs, with workshops, advice surgeries and other activities run by a wide range of writers. Arts Council England (Yorkshire) give us regular financial support, as well as ongoing advice and encouragement, and we receive funding for specific projects from other bodies.
